According to the DailyMail, a woman in Scotland was struck by the lightening when filming a thunderstorm with her iPhone in front of the open window. The woman said that she was saved by a new rubber phone cover, which delivered just hours before she was struck.
Thanks to the resistance of the rubber phone case stopped the phone getting explosion and saved her life. The phone cases might be can save you a life, but how can you make sure your phone security?
How to access your phone?
For that matter, phone’s security is always one of the concerned issues to the consumer, especially the information security. So we need to use password, gesture, face ID or touch ID when we unlock the phone or start a application.
From the beginning of the phone unlocked with the Menu button to the Apple’s Face ID, phones unlocked security have a well developed in recent decades.
We will make a comparison between face ID and touch ID, in order to reveal people’s awareness degree of information security protection and give a suggestion of what unlocked mode is your needed .
Different Types of Fingerprint Unlock
Touch ID is a fingerprint recognition feature, designed and release by Apple Inc., that allow users to unlock Apple devices and purchase online with Apple Pay.
Touch ID first applied on iPhone 5s since September 20, 2013, this is the first time that fingerprint recognition widely used on the phones unlocked mode as well.
The Home button database, Secure Enclave, will not record your fingerprint pattern but got a series corresponding numeric characters for replacement, it is isolated with a hardware filter so the AP cannot access it which protect your privacy safety in some cases.
It’s the same as the Touch ID, Android smartphone fingerprint scanner do a great job as well, besides the fast and accuracy of the sensor, Android phones can perform more novel unlock methods, such as the Huawei Nova 3, the fingerprint sensor is set on the phone’s back.
Sony design the side-mounted fingerprint scanner on Xperia Z5. In terms of fingerprint recognition technique, iPhone has an advantage on security undoubtedly. But in other areas, the design of Android’s fingerprint sensor may actually offer a better overall user experience.
Different Types of Face ID and Face Unlock
Apple’s Face ID
Face ID first announced on September 12, 2017, currently only available for the iPhone X, which consists of a sensor with two modules. One projects a grid of more than 30,000 infrared dots onto a user’s face, and another module reads the pattern to confirm or deny access.
Analyst believes Apple’s 2018 iPhones could include a new TrueDepth camera system and a smaller notch, but it’s not yet clear if this prediction is correct.
This generates a 3D facial map stored in a local, secured area of the device’s processor, inaccessible by Apple itself.
The system learns from changes in a user’s face over time, and can therefore successfully recognize the owner while wearing glasses, hats, scarves, makeup, many types of sunglasses or with changes in beard.
But the system does not work with eyes closed or when you are lying on the side of the bed, in general, Face ID is great and safe for your privacy.
The future of Android’s facial recognition
It is not the same as the Apple’s TruthDepth Camera system, most of Android’s facial recognition system can be easily hacked by a Photo, they are not scanning your face in 3D but in 2D.
Thus, the security of the Android facial recognition system is a big deal, but it really fast to unlock your phone with 1 second when you start the recognition.
Some of Chinese smartphone companies have an improvement in the safety of facial recognition recently. The latest smartphone from OPPO, Find X, equips the stealth 3D camera to feature 3D Structured Light Technology, which using 15,000 facial dot recognition and intelligent analysis.
3D Face Recognition is 20 times safer than fingerprint recognition for unlocking the phone. Besides, Huawei also released an infrared light technology, which unlock the phone with a simple glance in almost any environment, from dark bars to bright slopes. Huawei’s new Face ID technology is fast, secure and works in all light conditions.
What’s your favorite unlocking methods?
The old school way, unlock with PIN lasted for a while, because of people are tired to enter a string of password every single time when they wan to access to their phones.
So they more likely to use facial recognition and fingerprint scanner, but PIN still is the most important way to unlock the phone.
Comparing with the PIN, facial id and fingerprint id is more safer, but sometimes if our finger get dirty or get wet, the fingerprint scanner might not be working.
Furthermore, the trend of the cell phone’s design is seeking an all-screen smartphone and it will affect not only phone’s appearance, but also the using experience if the fingerprint scanner in the back.
Vivo shows off the first in-screen fingerprint scanner, which sorts of phones were popular in the marketplace now.
In spite of the perfect security of the Face ID is, the first generation still lack of the better using experience to the customer, so I think Apple’s new products on Face ID will get a huge advance.
For the Android’s Face Unlock, more and more manufactures eliminated the 2D scanner in Face Unlock for their new cellphone.
The facial recognition security will get a higher rank. Generally, privacy and convenience will better integrate with Facial Recognition and Fingerprint ID in the future, for fulfilling the demand of humans.
